Did you know Disney is HIGH-KEY rushing all their features to 4K UHD?
I didn’t.
And I’d recently discovered this myself when perusing my local online store (yes, I know how dumb this sounds).
“4K UHD THOUGH? WHAT’S THAT?!”
I’m sure I’ve told you but I can’t be bothered going back to find it; It’s the best way currently to watch video at home physically. I have to clarify that, because wow, begun the streaming wars have.
4K UHD or Ultra HD Blu-Ray is simply the next form of home media delivery. Traditional, and what most people would see as the first-to-market form of Blu-Ray, was when it blew us away with its raw graphics fidelity as it ran at 1080p fully at home (as long as you had the TV to do so).
As TV’s have gotten more powerful, and moved more into the Smart era, we’ve seen UHD discs take precedent in the market with that incredible 4K resolution output.
That’s 3840 pixels by 2160 for the resolutionists out there.
There’s tonnes of other fancy sh*t associated with UHD, but that doesn’t matter as I’m here to talk about some of the best films of all time being re-released on the format and HOO BOY. While some movies showcase 4K well, you’ll never really beat an animated feature; There’s a crispiness to them that just can’t be replicated with real life.
So as Disney make digital dreams come true, both physically and stream, I thought I’d MICRO-RETRO-REVIEW their latest 4K releases because DISNEY DELIVER DIGITAL DREAMS…
Moana
I remember crying at the time to this sh*t, as it tapped into all these feelings I had about my ancestors, our past, their journey and more.
Plus the soundtrack was an absolute banger and I also totally did a long-form review here.
A++, would cry again.
Tangled
I’m gonna be honest here…I don’t know if I’ve ever finished Tangled. I know it’s a great riff on Rapunzel, and it makes me want Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi to “now kiss” (consensually) in real life because they’re so cute.
It also validates pans as a powerhouse melee weapon.
I’ve also heard the music is fantastic, or at least that’s what my 4 year old nephew tells me.
I rate this “Please watch this video of Mandy Moore absolutely SLAYING Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella'”.
Frozen
I don’t know if I want to talk about Frozen, because the Box Office and success of its track, ‘Let It Go’, do so well enough.
The song to this day still infects countless eardrums and I believe the word ‘ear-worm’ has been updated to reflect this.
“The cold never bothered me anyway” out of 32°F.
Big Hero 6
I F*CKING LOVE BIG HERO 6.
Also, did you know this was intended to be the start of a sort-of Marvel Spin-Off universe for other IP’s to extend into?
With the release of Disney+ coming up, I hope we see more from Hiro and the team, as Big Hero 6 was a fantastic feature with a fun team, heart-felt storyline and that classic “balalala” fist bump.
“Turn it up to bayMAX” out of volume.
Zootopia
Zootopia is my surprise hit on this list. I honestly remember skipping it for some reason, and then watching it at home on release and thinking “WHAT HAVE I DONE…I SHOULD HAVE SUPPORTED THIS SURPRISE HIT.”
Again, thankfully, the Box Office did that, but boy did I feel like a BUFFOON. Or a baboon if I was in that universe, but that would be condescending to that species.
Anyway, J.K Simmons is a lion out of 10.
Yes, the timing is impeccable.
I mean, it’s almost Christmas after all. With their library quickly filling up the 4K ranks, in beautiful stylistic cover-art no less, the time is NOW to buy them all.
Yes, you probably do own them, maybe on DVD or Blu-Ray…but are those 4K? They are not. And why would you do that to yourself?
If it’s for your kids, okay I get it.
BUT WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO THEM…
MERRY CHRISTMAS.
