The Fun In A CIVIL WAR

As the character posters for Captain America: Civil War were released over the last few days (okay, well maybe not ALL of them), it’s only fitting that come their conclusion the second trailer for the movie is released!

With a cadre of new scenes which have been intertwined with previous shots we’ve seen from the first trailer and following TV spots, these help refuel the hype engine as the run-up to release begins to escalate for Civil War.

Continuing from Phase 2’s final movies Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Ant-Man, Civil War sees the government setting up a governing body to oversee the Avengers. Dividing the team into two camps—one led by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability, the Avengers will meet their toughest challenge yet: Each other.

Having so much new information and scenery on hand, I felt the need to have a look at it and share some of my wonderful pop-culture knowledge with you all and the fun I’ve seen in this new trailer.

So let’s have some fun with a Civil War!

    Oh Hi Miles…oh, it’s you Peter…
    CIVIL T2 Spidey

“Miles? Who the hell is Miles??” you may be asking.

I’m trusting you all to know who Peter Parker is, him having filled the spectacular spandex of Spider-Man since Sam Raimi‘s trilogy and the follow-up Amazing films from Marc Webb. Previously played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield respectively, the web-crawler is now being portrayed by Tom Holland, a reasonably new face to Hollywood.
As Peter Parker has been getting younger with each new iteration, it’s been aligning him more with how Spidey has typically entered the fray with other heroes; As a young male who parades around with “Man” in his superhero name (that’s the joke).

So what does Miles have to do with this?

Miles Morales is the Spider-Man from Earth-1610 in the comics which is known as the Ultimate Universe. The reason I bring him up is this awesome new costume that the new Marvel Cinematic Universe Spidey is wearing looks to be a mash up of suits acknowledging the work it’s taken to get him back under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella.

Oh…and Miles is 15 years old…which lines him up with the cinematic Peter even more.

With elements that look very similar to Miles shoulder panels, it also shares some of the attributes of the first Amazing Spider-Man suit, making it an almost middle-ground like costume before it potentially reaches the more comic feel they accomplished in part 2 of the Amazing series.

Of course the final twist though may be that Miles and the Amazing suit might just have to thank artist Alex Ross who developed this amazing concept suit in 2001 for Raimi’s original Spider-Man film.

Multiple nods? Oh Marvel you clever arachnids…

    Bad Romance
    CIVIL T2 Scar

Scarlet Witch and The Vision are THROWING DOWN.

In the comics universe, one of the most classic couples is Wanda and…well he’s still The Vision. While he is an “artificial” being, he is definitely more biological in every sense of the word so you can leave your crazy ideas and bias at the door!

But this scene is interesting because Age Of Ultron had the moment Vision saved Wanda from Sokovia’s destruction. With its sweeping orchestral crescendo and her loving gaze at him as he picks her up and flies off into a sunset, it’s weird to see them fighting like The Vision forgot to take out the trash and Scarlet Witch is forcing him to yield with her as-yet-undefined powers as penance.

This looks like a bad romance…

    Who Shot Jim Rhodes?
    CAP T2 Jim

    “RHODES!”

While the trailer likes to toy with the idea that it’s Bucky firing away, any good story is never that clear cut. With a gigantic bolt of energy piercing War Machine’s armour and disrupting his Arc Reactor power source, he falls to the earth with a concerned Tony chasing him down and sitting with his fallen comrade.

But who shot him? And with a Government so heavily involved in what the team should be doing, could we see some players from behind-the-scenes making a move to pit the Avengers against each other?

    Hmmmm….

    “It’s A Walk-Off!“
    CIVIL T2 Walk

    #TeamCap.
    #TeamIronMan.

Will we finally get to see the gigantic battle of superheroes we’ve dreamed of?

Yes. Yes we will. And it looks GLORIOUS.

What’s Going On With James Buchanan Barnes?
    CIVIL T2 Buck

Come the end of The Winter Soldier, it looked like we might have our Bucky (Sebastian Stan) back after his turn as a mind-controlled assassin. And Ant-Man’s stinger credits sequence assures us that we do.

Until we have the shot above where it looks like he’s trying to shoot Tony’s face off. Luckily Stark has some fantastic new tech to protect himself in this situation but what the heck is going on with Bucky?

Is he good? Is he bad? Is he…both?

    The Cost Of War

    New York.

    Washington D.C.

    Sokovia.

With a loss of 274 lives and around $495 billion dollars worth of damage, the Avengers are being held accountable for grave situations that only they had the means to stop. Approaching the team as a corporate entity that will succeed best under controls, the Government looks to undermine what the the Avengers have succeeded in doing so far and just goes to show how much they want to put these “weapons” under their control.

    The Raft
    CIVIL T2 RAFT

Now this is a fun nod! It could be something else, but this here…thing…is what I’m assuming to be THE RAFT! The Raft is a facility for holding powered humans, and with the events unfolding in Civil War, it’s fitting that this classic location shows up. While in the comics it’s been an island or boat of some form, this revised version definitely matches the theme of the Raft’s secrecy and use!

    GO BLACK PANTHER GO!
    CIVIL T2 Pant

    LOOK AT HIM GO!

With speed and agility that appears to surpass our favourite Super Soldier, the Wakandan Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) chases down Bucky through a motorway tunnel on a motorbike with ease.

And with his claws tearing through the back frame of the bike, it looks like the abundance of vibranium in Wakanda is being put to good use by the Black Panther!

    The Ant-Man and Hawkeye Show
    CIVIL T2 AntHawk

With confirmation that Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) would be showing up in Civil War on the same team as Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), fans cried out everywhere for the classic team-up move that has been used so often by the duo.

And the trailer confirms its use in the film and OH MY GOD, ANT-MAN IS RIDING AN ARROW SHOT BY HAWKEYE…

    Battle Of The Gods
    CIVIL T2 Gods

    Tony Stark.
    Steve Rogers.

One, an egotistical genius with an advanced suit of armour. The other a displaced Super Soldier with trust and loyalty built during a World War.

Meeting on a mountaintop, the two heroes square off in biblical fashion. High above the ground, they each make their choice and fight for their right to defend it. With Tony raising his hand and preparing a repulsor blast, a defiant Steve stares him down, bloodied and tired, and responds with his classic line: “I could do this all day”.

When they meet, what destruction will they leave behind?

Steve Rogers: Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?
Tony Stark: Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.
Steve Rogers: I know guys with none of that worth ten of you.

    What were your thoughts?

Full to the brim of awesome moments, Civil War looks to be a big start for Phase 3 of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Introducing new characters and maybe removing some old, nothing will ever be the same after this.
