“A famous man once said, ‘We create our own demons.’ Who said that? What does that even mean? Doesn’t matter. I said it ’cause he said it.”
I freaking love Iron Man 3. Typically, I save my thoughts for later in the review, but I just love this film. It’s bombastic fun and a perfect vehicle for RDJ’s charisma and charm.. In many ways, Iron Man 3 is the cherry on top of the sundae that is Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe..
Before that, let’s take it back to the beginning..
After the announcement of Shane Black taking over Direction from the ‘implied’ failure of Iron Man 2, fans were beyond excited. Although the film was riding the success of Avengers, it needed some chutzpah to truly boost the MCU’s image as a carefully planned universe, not just a lucky break..
So, unsurprisingly, getting the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, and who directed the critically acclaimed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, was a smart move.. That, and his already well-established working relationship with Downey, sent this into the stratosphere.
And it shows, boy does it show.
Iron Man 3 brings the man out of the suit. And it walks him through a Detective story which shifts between destruction, small-town intrigue, nationwide terrorism and PTSD. It allows him to become as impressive as the highly-advanced armor he wears.
A supporting cast that’s full of names and talent, Iron Man 3 is the film that gives literal meaning to Tony Stark’s purpose moving forward;
He is Iron Man.
