“Bloody violent.”
That’s the second thing people will think after viewing the NOBODY trailer. The first thing they will think of is JOHN WICK.
But just what is NOBODY? It’s Bob Odenkirk living a life of mediocrity that’s suddenly upended because he’s nobody. You don’t want to run into nobody. But somebody runs into nobody, and from there it’s a trip down memory lane adorned by bloody murder.
Written by Derek Kolstad of JOHN WICK fame, and Directed by Ilya Naishuller, the comparisons to WICK don’t end. Creating a universe that’s as WICK as they come, I won’t be surprised if they connect in future. It also helps explain NOBODY quite simply; It’s JOHN WICK but he has a family.
His family consists of the always affable Connie Nielsen, and some kids who are kids. Except the son who projects toxic masculinity probably propagated by school life and friends, as Odenkirk’s ‘Hutch’ wouldn’t have shared that, due to being somebody before becoming nobody again.
Its action feels heavier compared to WICK. That’s not to say it’s more or less bloody, but it’s HEAVY. The work they produce in WICK almost flows like air; Seamlessly dancing from victim to victim. NOBODY has to hit and BE HIT to fight. Observant of surroundings, each move has to mean something. This, in turn, produces one of my favourite moments in the film, with how he reads another characters action before engagement.
Odenkirk absolutely delivers in the role, notably stepping away from the greasy Saul Goodman. Daddy in nature, and “DADDY” in action, he carries the film effortlessly through its appreciated 92 minutes of runtime. Christopher Lloyd turns up in probably one of the best roles of 2021, while Aleksei Serebyrakov‘s Yulian is another WICK parallel, supplemented by an incredible intro.
If you saw the trailer, and it tickled your WICKLE, then it hits the spot.
Unapologetically violent, simple and brief; NOBODY is the perfect action blockbuster. I’m sure it will earn just as many rewatches as the Baba Yaga themselves.
NOBODY reeks of WICK, but for the best reasons. Big action chased by bloody result, it sees Odenkirk turned into a One Man Army who discovers that maybe it's family which makes you better; A better killing machine that is.
