Wish Granted | DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY Review

    THANK YOU MIGHTY SHENRON!

Did you know that this is the TWENTIETH Dragon Ball film??

    TWENTY!

For a franchise over 35 years old, it has remained true to its animated roots (aside from the live-action feature we don’t discuss). It’s astounding to think we have another anime which can rival the likes of Pokémon.

With series creator Akira Toriyama taking charge of this feature, will we see the many strands from across the Dragon Ball Universe sewn back together?

You kind of get why Toriyama wanted sole responsibility over the story for Dragon Ball Super: Broly. After the events of Super, multiple realities are in effect and everything canonical and non-canonical is off the table.

And Toriyama goes to freaking town with it.

Exposition gets to work, lacing earlier events and tales together, starting from Planet Vegeta and leading us all the way back to Earth. Here we’ll join Goku (Sean Schemmel) and Vegeta (Christopher Sabat) after the conclusion of the Tournament Of Power (and you thought the MCU had A LOT). Now, the previously non-canonical Broly is introduced to the Dragon Ball Universe and becomes inextricably tied to its future. Once the precedent is set, the second half of the film tumbles into what fans have been dying to see.

    Goku. Vegeta. Broly.

Throwing the f*ck down,we get into what the series is famous for. With a revamped animation style, Dragon Ball Super: Broly really sells the beauty in the insanity. Frenetic yet calm. Powerful yet controlled. It dominates the screen like you’re in the middle of a Color Run, with flourishes of every hue thrown at your eyes, accompanied by a crazed “AHHHHHHH” and no time to rest.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly brings back a tonne of fan favourite things. And it presents another strong turning point for the series, much like its previous films.

And hopefully that means we’ll hear Goku ‘Saiyan’ his name again soon (followed by 7 episodes of yelling).

    8 YELLS FOR 20 EPISODES

I mean...I've already watched it twice. And it was awesome both times so you should see it on the biggest damn screen you can!
