THANK YOU MIGHTY SHENRON!
Did you know that this is the TWENTIETH Dragon Ball film??
TWENTY!
For a franchise that’s over 35 years old and hasn’t strayed too far from it’s animated roots (bar that live-action feature we don’t talk about…), it’s astounding to think we have another anime that can rival the likes of Pokémon.
And with series creator Akira Toriyama taking sole charge over this latest feature, will we see the many strands of frayed plot from across the Dragon Ball Universe sewn back together?
A planet destroyed, a powerful race reduced to nothing. After the devastation of Planet Vegeta, three Saiyans were scattered among the stars, destined for different fates.
While two found a home on Earth, the third was raised with a burning desire for vengeance and developed an unbelievable power. And the time for revenge has come!Destinies collide in a battle that will shake the universe to its very core!
Goku is back to training hard so he can face the most powerful foes the universes have to offer, and Vegeta is keeping up right beside him. But when they suddenly find themselves against an unknown Saiyan, they discover a terrible, destructive force.
You kind of get why Toriyama wanted sole responsibility over the story for Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
After the events of Super, multiple realities are in effect and everything canonical and non-canonical is off the table.
And Toriyama goes to freaking town with it.
Exposition gets to work, lacing the events of earlier tales together, starting from the Planet Vegeta and leading us all the way back to Earth where we join Goku (Sean Schemmel) and Vegeta (Christopher Sabat) after the conclusion of the Tournament Of Power (and you thought the MCU had a lot of threads…).
There is where the previously non-canonical Broly is now introduced to the Dragon Ball Universe and becomes inextricably tied into its future.
Once precedent is set, the second half of the film tumbles into what the fans are dying to see.
Goku. Vegeta. Broly.
Throwing the f*ck down and getting into it like the series is famous for, with a revamped animation style that really sells the beauty in the insanity.
Frenetic yet calm. Powerful yet controlled.
It takes over the screen like you’re in the middle of a Colour Run and flourishes of every hue are thrown at your eyeballs with a crazed “AHHHHHHH” following it with no time to rest.
The return of many fan favourite things, sees Dragon Ball Super: Broly as another strong turning point for the series (depending on if it returns), much like its sister-films.
And hopefully that means we’ll hear Goku ‘Saiyan’ his name again soon (followed by 7 episodes of yelling).
Summary
I mean...I've already watched it twice. And it was awesome both times so you should see it on the biggest damn screen you can!
