I feel like there was this interesting period in the early 2000’s.
As we passed the halfway mark for the 5th generation of consoles, our eyes were on the future. But rumours swirled while shelves were stocked with variants of the 32-bit era. And in New Zealand, one particular brand flooded the shelves with an ‘Atomic Purple’ version of itself at a bargain price. I think this, and the ‘Clear’ series of controllers from PlayStation, are the memories embedded within Kiwi gamers.
And after what feels like two generations of consoles, PlayStation is back to bend the light around us again.
‘PlayStation are pleased to introduce the Prism Collection, featuring three striking transparent designs for DualSense wireless controllers and PS5 console covers: Graphite Gray, Flare Orange and Emerald Green.’

The name ‘Flare Orange’ has been contentious online, but there’s no doubt these controllers and covers are amazing. ‘The new collection was inspired by our design teams’ interest to bring a transparent appearance to PS5, and give players a closer look into the design and craftsmanship behind our DualSense controllers and PlayStation 5 consoles’. This transparent precedent potentially restarted by Insomniac’s Wolverine and its hardware collection.
We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers. We wanted to bring back the iconic see-through trend of the late ’90s in a fresh, modern way that complements the PS5’s industrial design.”
Leo Cardoso (Color, Material, and Finish design team)
See. Late 90’s. Early 2000’s. Call that a handshake between Dutch and Dillon in the Predator, with how powerful the synergy is.
To complement the futuristic aesthetic, we carefully selected three distinct colors: a vibrant orange that subtly takes on a rosy hue where the transparent material overlaps, a deep hunter green that gains depth through its transparency, and a cool-toned storm gray.”
Satoshi Aoyagi (Color, Material, and Finish design team)
